Carlisle’s popular international market returns today.

The market, in the city centre, will be open from 9am.

The open-air event will runs until 5pm on Monday, August 25.

Organised by Market Place Europe, it is supported by Cumberland Council.

It includes arts, crafts, unique gifts, food and the Box Bar, serving cold beers and beverages. The popular Dutch plant seller will also be there.

Stalls will be open:

  • Thursday August 21: 9am-6pm.
  • Friday August 22: 9am-6pm.
  • Saturday August 23: 9am-6pm.
  • Sunday August 24: 10am-5pm.
  • Bank Holiday Monday, August 25: 10am-5pm.

The market will be held outside the Old Town Hall.

Work on the new-look city centre is expected to be completed by mid to late September.

An ancient proclamation will be recited at the Market Cross on Saturday August 23 at 10am.

The proclamation is a declaration of Carlisle’s rights to hold an annual Fair in August, originally granted to the citizens of the city in 1352 by Edward III.

A procession including Carlisle mayor Jeanette Whalen, the chair of Cumberland Council Andy Semple, sword and mace bearers and other civic dignitaries will make its way from Old Town Hall to the Market Cross in the city centre.
