Cumbria’s county veterans made their mark at Vets Fest 2025, not only reaching their second consecutive grand final but also winning the tournament’s fundraising cup for their exceptional off-field efforts.
The annual event, run by the Wooden Spoon children’s charity, combines competitive veterans rugby with raising money for disadvantaged and disabled children across the UK.
Thanks to the generosity of their players and supporters, Cumbria ensured every pound they collected will go directly into projects across their home county.
On the pitch, Cumbria produced a memorable campaign, claiming notable wins over several county teams including a powerful victory against Scotland to reach the grand final.
In the final itself, the squad came up against the invitational Omerta Babas, a side packed with ex-professionals. Despite a determined display, Cumbria were edged out 19-0 after a bruising, physical contest.
Players representing clubs from across the county Carlisle, Keswick, Cockermouth, Kendal, Aspatria, Wigton, Kirby Lonsdale and Workington embodied teamwork, grit and Cumbrian spirit throughout the day.
Reflecting on the achievement, captain Jim Beary said: “Leading this group into another Grand Final is an honour. The fundraising, the camaraderie, and the sheer effort from the lads summed up everything that makes Cumbrian rugby special. It was a proud day.”
The next Vets Fest is set for 26 September 2026, promising another celebration of rugby, community, and charity.
