Fourteen-year-old James Wareing has the right golfing pedigree to go on to a successful career in the sport.
He showed his potential recently at Kendal where he won the County’s Junior Champion of Champions competition.
A member of both Workington and Silloth clubs, he was actually representing Silloth in this particular event.
His grandfather Adrian Drabble was professional at Workington for a number of years while his uncle Chris Drabble taught/coached golf at a high level.
On the other side of the family his father Bob Wareing is a talented county golfer while his grandfather Keith Wareing launched the Golf Driving Range at Distington a number of years ago.
As well as those, adding some steel to his play perhaps, his great grandfather was Jimmy ‘Pongo’ Wareing, who played rugby union for Cumberland and later signed professional with Workington Town rugby league club.
The Kendal course is a par 69 and James, a pupil at Keswick School, went round in 73.
Off a handicap of six that produced a nett score of 67, he finished five shots clear of Jay Hyde, a Workington clubmate on nett 72.
They were followed by Owen Ridley (Carlisle) nett 73; Aidan Blythe (Brampton) nett 75 and Edward Barron (Kendal) nett 77.
In his round James had three birdies, was par on eight holes and made bogey on seven.
James is junior captain at Silloth this year so it was a nice county title to go with the honour.
