West Cumbrian ace Dan Bewley finished third in last night’s Grand Prix in Poland.
It means the Maryport racer has a chance to finish third overall and land the bronze medal at the end of the series.
He picked up eight points in his five heats to make progress.
He had started by winning the sprint race before the meeting proper but had a last in his first outing.
Then followed a second, third, win and second to go through to the next stage which he won and make the final.
Belle Vue team-mate Brady Kurtz made an electric start and although Bewley chased him for much of the way the Cumbrian star was himself overtaken at the start of the last lap by home favourite Bartosz Zmarzlik.
The Belle Vue captain Kurtz became only the second rider in speedway history to win four successive Grand Prix after this victory.
Kurtz followed up his wins in Gorzow, Malilla and Riga with another triumph in the penultimate round of the World Championship series, a feat only ever previously achieved by six-time champion Tony Rickardsson back in 2005.
By coincidence Kurtz is also seeking to stop Poland’s Bartosz Zmarzlik from winning a sixth World title, and the two riders will go into the decider at Vojens on September 13 split by just three points after Zmarzlik finished second on the night, having briefly extended his lead to five with third place in the afternoon Sprint Race.
Kurtz said: “Not many people get to battle Bartek for the world title at the final round of the GP series, so I’ll take a moment to take that in and hopefully enjoy the experience, no matter what the outcome.
“I don’t really know what to say after winning four in a row. All I know is the only chance I had to win was to keep winning rounds really. I’ve won one more, and now it’s one round to go.
“Before the season, I just wanted to enjoy it. I didn’t want to say anything about my goals or what I wanted to do. It has been a hell of a season, and my team has been unbelievable. They have been absolutely perfect from start to finish.”
Bewley is now well placed for a medal overall after finishing third in the meeting, leaving him five points ahead of Fredrik Lindgren in the race for bronze.
