Braithwaite’s 13-year-old Joshua Zaninetti was more disappointed than most at the weekend’s weather which affected the village side’s Eden Valley League fixture.
For Joshua was just itching to get the ball in his hands again after an unforgettable performance the week before.
It really was a wonder performance by the youngster as he ripped through Nunwick with an unforgettable performance — 6-26, featuring a hat-trick, four wickets in four balls, and five in six deliveries.
It was a once-in-a-lifetime spell from a teenager who left everyone at The Nunwick Oval shaking their heads in disbelief.
The match was a key one in Division Two of the Eden Valley League between second-placed Nunwick and Braithwaite who were lying third.
It’s a three-way battle for the title with Carlisle thirds.
His first five over spell earned him only one wicket but when brought back into the attack his second spell produced a hat-trick, then four-in-four and then five in six balls.
Four of his victims were clean bowled and he caught and bowled the other.
He wasn’t among the rabbits either because they included all their top batsmen.
Braithwaite went on to win by three wickets to keep their title hopes alive.
But this Saturday after making 170-8 after 40 overs the game at Gamelsby was abandoned.
Although he didn’t get the chance to bowl, even then you couldn’t keep the youngster out of the headlines as he went in first wicket down and scored a valuable 40 before being run out.
However, Carlisle thirds won at Nunwick by eight runs in a thriller and have won the title.
They are 14 points clear of Braithwaite with just one game left to play.
The villagers finish off at home to Scotby this Saturday four points better off than Nunwick in what is now a battle for the runners-up position.
