Workington speedway legend Carl Stonehewer has praised the generosity of the Comets fans.
Stonehewer is taking part in The Skinflint Rally – driving to Nice in a car that cost less than £500.
He had been due to visit Workington two weeks ago but the meeting was rained off so he drove up at the weekend and was promoting the Rally at the Comets meeting with Scunthorpe.
He is raising money for the Ben Fund Bonanza and a collection at the Northside track realised £1,819.
“That was just overwhelming. It shows again just how generous people are from Workington and Cumbria as a whole,” he said.

Nick Sharples was his mechanic for a long time during his racing career and the pair are teaming up to complete the Skinflint Rally in September. It is not a race but an endurance driving challenge.
The challenge is buying a car for under £500, and then trying to complete the rally – a trip to Nice in the South of France via Italy over three days.

Stoney said: “I have benefited from the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund many times over my career, and this trip is my pay back to the fund.
“To do this challenge with my best mate will be awesome and we can’t wait to do it.”
