Redcar’s 53-37 win over Workington at the ECCO Arena ended the Comets’ hopes of a dramatic late run into the Cab Direct Championship play-offs.
The Cumbrian side needed maximum points from their three remaining meetings but they now cannot catch Edinburgh, who are confirmed as top-four finishers and will now face Glasgow in the semi-finals.
Redcar, who are in the play-offs themselves, did the damage in the opening nine races on their own track with four 5-1s in a five heat spell to go 22 points up after Heat 9.
The Comets did fight back with Tate Zischke involved in two later 5-1s, but it was not enough to get back into contention.
Guest Jake Allen won three races and scored nine points in a solid Bears display where each rider took at least one win, whilst Zischke scored 9 + 2 for the Comets, who have two league matches remaining both against Berwick.
- Redcar Bears – Charles Wright 8 + 1; Jake Mulford 7 + 1; Jason Edwards 8; Jake Allen 9; Danny King 8 + 1; Sam Hagon 7 + 1; Ace Pijper 6 + 1.
- Workington Comets – Troy Batchelor 6; Fraser Bowes 4 + 1; Tate Zischke 9 + 2; Jye Etheridge 4; Antti Vuolas 4 + 1; Jacob Hook 8; Vinnie Foord 1.
