Work on a multi-million-pound network investment project continues to progress, with activity moving to the next stage.

Engineers from power network operator SP Electricity North West are well under way with replacing 28km of underground electricity cables.

The scheme, which started in April, has been designed to improve reliability on Barrow’s power network.

Michelle Scrogham, Barrow and Furness MP, visited the site and met with engineers to see how the scheme is developing and why the network upgrade is needed.

Tracey Cuthbertson, who is overseeing the work in Barrow for SP Electricity North West, said: “The work taking place in Barrow is progressing nicely and already teams have installed 1.7km of underground ducting which the cable will eventually sit in.

“It’s an extensive engineering project but one that was required. As people’s reliance on electricity increases, it’s essential as the region’s power network operator we continue to provide excellent value for money and a first-class service.

“Once complete, the new cables will undoubtedly improve reliability for thousands of properties in Barrow and Dalton while additional capacity will also be available, allowing for future development in the town using clean electricity.”

Teams are now working along Abbey Road towards the junction of Hawcoat Lane and Hollow Lane and while work takes place, temporary traffic lights, will be used ensuring teams can operate safely in the highway.

Mrs Scrogham added: “If you work or live in Barrow, you’ll have seen the road works on Abbey Road for the work being done by SP Electricity North West.

“I know that these have caused some disruption, and I recently met with engineers from the operator to see the ongoing works and to talk about how the essential network upgrade is going.

“The works are to deliver a huge investment to update and improve reliability on Barrow’s power network.

“This increased capacity will future proof the network and allow for the planned future development of the town.

“We did talk about efforts to keep disruption to a minimum, including talking with residents and locals to try to find the best possible times to undertake the work.

“It was encouraging to see the progress that’s being made.”
