Maryport’s new Cumberland ARL championship winning team have every incentive to go on and match the club’s best-ever team.
When Maryport beat Seaton on Saturday to win the CARL Premier Division title in a play-off it was the first time they had managed that for 51 years.
They have had success in the cup competitions over the years but had not clinched the league’s top flight crown for over half a century.
The 1974 team was a bit special, going through the league season undefeated and going on to win the Top Four play-off.
However, Maryport did not win the Cumberland Cup or Amateur Cup that season.
The current team could surpass the achievements of their former champions as they are still to contest the Top Four semi-final and are through to the Cumberland Cup final.

Although Lowca and Wath Brow will have something to say about it, there could be an ARL trilogy with Maryport and Seaton set to clash in two more trophy showdowns.
Alan Watson skippered the 1974 side and is pictured held aloft on the shoulders of Bob Southward and Neil Hardy.

George Huddart and Alan ‘Midge’ Jackson were both in the team and are still keen supporters of the club.
Also on the picture are Keith Stewartson, Gerry Gartland, John ‘Six Foot’ Johnston, David Holliday and Kevin Gartland.
Paul Simpson has been in touch to say his dad, John James Simpson, known as Jimmy, is fifth in from the left on the back row of the first picture and top left in the second photo.
