
Three Workington golfers did the club and county proud in a major national championship.
Cumbria’s representatives after winning the county’s Inter Club title at Silloth, the Workington trio finished fourth overall.
Will Bowe, Jack Hunter and Richard Mewse were among 102 golfers and 34 teams competing at the Oaks Golf Club near York in the English Men’s Champion Club tournament.
The Workington trio finished with a gross score of 445 after two rounds – just three shots behind the winners, Rotherham Golf Club representing Yorkshire.
Will (74, 73) and Jack (69, 78) both shot 147 to finish joint 10th in the big field.
Jack’s 69 on the opening day had him lying second overall at the halfway stage.
Nick Day, of Gloucestershire, was the individual winner on 139 (71, 68).
Will is no stranger to the competition having been in the Workington side that won in 2009.
He won his first club championship in 2000 and since then he has gone on to win it a total of 19 times. In this year’s final he beat Jack.
The club said on social media said: “Well done to the lads and many thanks to the caddies and supporters that travelled down to show your support to the lads and the club itself.”
