An 82-year-old man had to be rescued after falling 40ft and ending up clinging to a tree root.
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called out on Thursday, September 25, to Dodd Wood, near Keswick, at around 4.30pm.
The man and his son had set off from Dancing Gate with the intention of walking up the paths to the top of Dodd.
The trail became very steep just below a forest track and the man slipped over and was not able to move up or down.
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team said: “Unable to help his father by himself the son called 999 and asked for mountain rescue help.
“The team were able to drive a Sprinter to where the path exits onto the forest track.
“The man was located around 40ft below clinging to a tree root, where he had been since the call for help was made.
“Team members quickly made their way down to him and made him secure before attaching a rope to safeguard his extrication. The two were driven back to town where the words ‘pub’ and ‘drink’ were overheard!”
It was the third call of the day for the volunteers.
At around 11.35am, they were called to Force Crag Mine.
The team said: “A couple had walked along the track to Force Crag Mines and had gone a few hundred metres beyond the stream crossing when they stopped for a rest before climbing up towards Outerside.
“The man suddenly developed severe back pain and could not continue. On arrival a team medic assessed the man and administered strong analgesia before doing a short stretcher carry to the vehicles from where he was driven down the track to rendezvous with an ambulance.”
At around 2.40pm, they were called after a 78-year-old woman slipped while climbing up the east side of Castlehead.
She had landed on her back and was in a lot of pain.
The team said: “Being close to the base, we were on hand quickly.
“A team doctor supervised a less experienced team member whilst they did an assessment, all useful learning.
“Some pain relief was given before a stretcher carry to the road. The woman was taken to the cottage hospital in Keswick so she could be looked after while waiting for an ambulance for onward transfer to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle or the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.”
