Cumbrian rugby union has been paying tribute to a popular member of the Hawcoat Park club who has died.
Eddie France, a former player and official at the Barrow club, died on Friday.
The club said: “Eddie gave a life-time of dedicated service to Vickers Sports Club now Hawcoat Park Sports Club and was respected by everyone involved at our club including the bowls section where along with his wife Ann they were excellent bowlers over many years.
“A no-nonsense, totally committed hard forward in his rugby playing days Eddie would get involved doing anything to ensure the success of his beloved club following his long playing career including chairman, match secretary and county representative, putting in thousands of volunteer hours of graft always for the benefit of all involved at our club.
“I know he got great pleasure over many years watching his lads Ian and Neil give everything they had in a maroon and white shirt – just as Eddie had always done. He was so proud both were our club captains.
“Eddie will never be forgotten by all his many friends at our sports club and our thoughts go out to Ann, Ian and Neil at this so very sad time.”
Aspatria’s Mel Hanley said: “So sorry to hear about Eddie passing, from all at Aspatria Rugby. A very sad loss to all his family and all who knew him.”
Former RFU president John Owen, of Shap, said: “A great rugby man who will be missed. My condolences to his family.”
Geoff Matthews, of Penrith, added: “Another legend gone. Condolences to the club and family from Penrith RUFC.”
There were also messages of condolences from St. Benedict’s, Cockermouth and Workington and Trafford MV in Manchester.
