Whitehaven held a minute’s applause ahead of their West Lancashire League game in tribute to a young club player who died during the week.
Bailey Kiddie was a popular member of the club’s Under-18s squad and had previously played for Cleator Moor Celtic Under-16s.
He died suddenly earlier this week.
The team followed up with a very good performance against high-riding Lostock St Gerard’s.
Although they lost 2-1 the West Cumbrians were unlucky and could easily have won the game.
Fourth in the table St Gerard’s had taken a 30th minute lead through Elisario Da Silva but Whitehaven were still very much in the contest.

Indeed when Harley Cueto levelled after 68 minutes it looked as if they could go on and win it.

But the visitors were awarded a penalty on 78 minutes and Da Silva netted what proved to be the winner.
Hear Jon Karl Benson’s verdict below:
All four Cumbrian clubs were involved in games against sides in the top six.
Millom, beaten 4-0 at home by leaders Eagley and bottom side Milnthorpe Corinthians battered 6-1 by reigning champions Tempest United were both on the receiving end.
But Cleator Moor Celtic made short of Hurst Green and won a high-scoring game 6-3.
They raced into a 3-0 lead inside 21 minutes with goals from Josh Palmer, Dan Hill and Zac Benson-Lester.
Although the visitors pulled one back through Daniel Mort, a fourth goal by Palmer before the break gave Celtic a comfortable 4-1 lead at half-time.
There were two goals apiece in the second-half – Hill and Sam Stones for Celtic and Ryan Duncan and James Whitworth for the visitors.
Hear Gareth Agnew’s views below:
In their heavy defeat, Shaun Gardner scored the Milnthorpe goal.
