Workington Comets were unable to give their fans the farewell performance they wanted at Northside’s GT Tyres Arena.
In their final championship meeting of the season they were beaten 48-42 by Berwick Bandits as their old rivals completed a league double to take home the aggregate point.
After nine heats it was all square at 27-27, but going into the final race the Comets needed a 5-1 to draw the match.
Instead the impeccable Peter Kildemand, a former Comets rider, won the race to complete a paid maximum.
The Bandits made it a 4-2 with Drew Kemp finishing in third place.
Antti Vuolas, the Comets top-scorer, was the meat in the Berwick sandwich and he completed his five rides with points in each.
Workington used rider replacement for the absent Fraser Bowes and had Jonatan Grahn at reserve for the injured Jacob Hook.
Not for the first time Grahn proved a steady guest, scoring 7 + 2 and with Vinnie Foord helping himself to 5 + 1 the Comets reserves outscored their Berwick rivals 12-4.
But Workington had only four race winners – all one each from Troy Batchelor, Jye Etheridge, Vuolas and Grahn.
