The bomb squad were called in to blow up a piece of ordnance found on a West Cumbrian beach.
Millom Coastguard Rescue Team and Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team was first called to Drigg beach on Sunday, September 28, at around noon after the suspicious item was spotted.
The team had enough time to take a photo of it and alert the bomb squad before the tide came in and covered the item.
At around 5pm, the teams returned to put a safety cordon in place.
Today, Millom Coastguard Rescue Team said: “Early start for the team this morning. We travelled to Drigg to confirm the shell was still in situ so the EOD team would set off.
“The army team arrived on scene and while we set up a safety cordon they prepared to dispose of the offending item in the time honoured fashion.
“Rest assured this particular shell has now gone forever.”
