Road teams are on standby for Storm Amy, which is set to batter Cumbria this week.
The Met Office has issued a weather warning for high winds from 6pm tomorrow, Friday October 2 until midnight on Saturday, October 3.
Westmorland & Furness Council said its highways staff were preparing for potential wind-blown trees and other debris which may affect the roads.
Gusts of 50 to 60mph are likely for many areas and may reach 60 to 70mph in some places for a time.
Oher potential effects of high winds could be:
- Road, rail, and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
- Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen
- Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible
- Disruption to council services such as waste and recycling collections
- Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
- Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
- Fallen trees and other damage to parks, public buildings and open spaces
- Some roads and bridges may close
Report highways emergencies that require immediate attention such as a fallen tree or flooding to the Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3306.
For less serious issues, complete the highways online reporting form at https://www.westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk/parking-streets-and-transport/streets-roads-and-pavements
If you spot a problem on the road such as flooding or fallen trees in Cumberland, you can report it online at www.bit.ly/ReportAProblemCumberland.
Cumberland Council has also confirmed that their highways teams are on stand-by to provide support.
People who are planning travel during the storm are encouraged to do the following:
- Plan your journey and allow extra time in case you come across any flooding or fallen trees/branches or other debris on the road
- Never drive through a road closure, take an alternative route, road closures are there for your safety
- Do not drive through flood water, only a small amount of water could damage your engine and cause you to get stuck and need help
The council is advising residents to check Met Office, Environment Agency, Electricity North West and United Utilities for updates.
If Storm Amy arrives, the Cumbria Crack team will be here, bringing you all the information you need.
