Two people have appeared in court following an incident at a Workington house, which contained a woman and baby, and sparked an armed police response.
Connor Cordin, 26, and 28-year-old Lauren Weaver stand jointly charged with aggravated burglary.
It is alleged that Cordin and Weaver entered an address in Workington as trespassers with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm on a person; and further that at the time of the incident they were in possession of a kitchen knife.
This knife is said to have been acquired inside the property, said prosecutor George Shelley, who told the court: “A female and a young baby were present in the premises. She was extremely fearful for her safety and her child’s safety.”
Police were called to the address at around 11pm on Saturday.
Cordin and Weaver, the latter of Windsor Road, Workington, did not enter any pleas when they appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court this afternoon. During a brief hearing in front of a district judge, the pair spoke from the dock to confirm their names, dates of birth and addresses.
Cordin stated he was of no fixed abode.
After hearing submissions from prosecution and defence lawyers in the case, district judge Philip Holden adjourned the case.
Lawyers have been granted time to prepare legal documents to determine whether aggravated burglary is the most appropriate charge in the case as it proceeds through the courts.
Cordin faces an additional charge which alleges affray on the same date. He entered no plea to that charge.
The case was adjourned until next Monday, October 13, when the respective lawyers’ documents will be considered, and a ruling made.
In the meantime both Cordin and Weaver have been remanded in custody.
Cumbria police asaid no injuries were reported but threats were alleged to have been made.
Firearms officers were deployed as part of the response. Police said there was no wider risk to the public.
