A new short film, The Run, is inspiring people across the country to think about the difference they could make by fostering.
Produced in partnership with more than 90 local authority fostering services, the film tells the story of Tom — an 11-year-old boy whose need to “run” away from danger becomes a story of hope and purpose.
It’s a powerful reminder of how stability and care can transform a child’s life.
Here in Cumbria, there’s an ongoing need for more foster carers — people who can offer children a safe and nurturing home when they can’t live with their birth families.
But fostering is about far more than opening your door; it’s about offering understanding, patience, and the ability to help a young person rebuild their confidence.
Who can foster?
Many people rule themselves out before they’ve even asked the question.
In reality, foster carers come from all walks of life. You can be single, married, or in a partnership; you can rent or own your home; you can have children of your own or none at all. What matters most is that you have the time, stability, and compassion to support a child who needs you.
Foster carers must be over 21 and have a spare room, but beyond that, it’s your personal qualities that count — patience, empathy, and a willingness to learn.

Different types of fostering
Cumbria Fostering offers several different schemes to match a carer’s circumstances and skills.
Some carers provide short-term placements, supporting children while longer-term plans are made, while others offer long-term care, giving children a stable home until adulthood.
There are also short break carers, who provide overnight stays to support families, and emergency carers, who can step in at short notice when a child needs somewhere safe to stay.

Training and support every step of the way
No one is expected to know everything from day one.
Cumbria Fostering provides extensive training and ongoing support, helping carers develop the confidence and skills they need.
From dedicated social workers to local support groups, financial allowances, and specialist training, foster carers in Cumbria are part of a strong and caring community.

Watching The Run may spark something — a sense that you could make a real difference.
If you can offer stability, kindness, and a listening ear, fostering could be one of the most rewarding decisions you ever make.
You could be the person who helps a child, like Tom, find their purpose and their place in the world.
