Keswick U18 Falcons delivered a gutsy and determined performance to edge out Northern Amazonians 21-15, writes Ben Challis.
It was a tightly contested clash in their second Halbro North East & Cumbria League game of the season, and a second home win in a row.
From the first whistle, the Falcons showed real intent, matching Northern’s physicality and refusing to back down under pressure.
The opening try came from a moment of brilliance when Abbie Burton broke through the defensive line and outpaced her chasers before linking up smartly with Willow Rigg, who finished the move and then calmly slotted home a difficult conversion with pinpoint accuracy.
In an evenly matched first half, Northern hit back with a well-worked try of their own for 7-5 at half time.
The next score was a second Northern try, with the visitors showing their strength in the set piece and breakdown, giving Northern a 7-10 lead.
The Falcons kept their composure, refused to let their heads drop, dominated the centre of the field, and Lillia Burton’s powerful carry put the home side back in front, sprinting forwards to dot down under the sticks, with Rigg once again adding the extras for 14-10.
Northern’s forward strength, particularly in the scrum, made things difficult for Keswick, but the Falcons dug deep.

Defensive organisation and tireless effort across the park helped weather the storm, and it was Willow Rigg who made the breakthrough again, sprinting almost the whole length of the pitch for a crucial score, and then adding her third conversion of the day with another superb kick, completing a perfect day with the boot.
Northern closed the gap with their third try late on, again unconverted, for 21-15. With five minutes left on the clock, a Northern score and conversion would have given the visitors a one point win, but in a tense and exciting finish, the Falcons’ defence stood firm, and despite Northern pressure in the last minute, Keswick held back the attacks to protect their hard won lead and see out the win.

After the match, coach Katie Airey said: “Our coaching team couldn’t be prouder of the girls today who all showed incredible heart, discipline, and real effort from start to finish.
“Every player gave 100%, stepping up under pressure, and every single player gave absolutely everything today. They stayed focused, supported each other, and never stopped working.

“It was one of those performances where you walk away just so incredibly proud, not just of the result, but of the effort and heart they showed from start to finish.
“Two games in, it’s two home wins, a fantastic start to the league season, and a clear sign of what this Falcons side is capable of. A great showcase for the spirit and quality in girls’ rugby.”
