Managerless Workington slumped to their eighth league defeat of the season and ended the day at the foot of the NPL Premier Division.
Morpeth swapped places with Reds in the table following a comfortable 2-0 victory over the Cumbrians at Craik Park, scoring both goals in a five-minute spell in the first half.
Caretaker manager, Brian Dawson, was pleased with the effort and commitment given by his side but lamented their lack of quality in the final third.
“Morpeth were better than us in both boxes and that’s where games are won and lost,” he said.
The hosts, below Reds at the start of play, opened the scoring with a 24th minute close-range effort from Nic Bollado and doubled their advantage soon after when the unmarked Dan Myers powered home a header.
Reds twice came close to reducing the arrears just before the interval but Dav Symington was thwarted on both occasions by Dan Langley who pulled off his only two saves of the game.
The visitors enjoyed more possession in the second half but never seriously threatened a Morpeth side who confidently registered their third clean sheet of the season.
On the managerial front, the club have received interest from outside of the county but will not start the selection process to find Darren Edmondson’s successor until next week.
Before then, they have another crucial home game on Tuesday when Gainsborough Trinity visit Borough Park (7.45pm).
