A Cumbrian independent veterinary group has welcomed the call for more transparency in its industry.
The Competitions and Markets Authority published a provisional report last week, that said there needed to be a shake-up after it found that pet owners paid more at larger vet groups than smaller practices and some practices did not make it clear that they were part of larger groups.
The watchdog proposed 21 measures for vets to regulate the industry, including price lists to be published and creating a comprehensive price comparison website.
Paragon Veterinary Group in north Cumbria said it strongly supported the recommendations.
Graham Lewis, lead vet – small animals at the Dalston-based practice, said: “As an independent practice owned and run by veterinary professionals who live and work in the local community, we’ve always believed in being open and honest with our clients.
“We are proud of the standard of care we offer and the trust we have built with local pet owners. We welcome these findings as a step towards more clarity across the industry.”
Paragon already publishes a price list on its website and said it recognised that costs — especially for medications — can be a source of frustration for pet owners.
Mr Lewis added: “Explaining why we have larger overheads than online pharmacies isn’t always easy, but we are always happy to discuss this openly and can provide written prescriptions where appropriate.
“We regularly review our charges to ensure they remain fair and reflect the time, skills, expertise and equipment required to deliver quality care.”
interested parties have until next month to submit a response to the Competitions and Markets Authority, which will publish its final decision in March.
