Workington Town have announced that Rio Corkill will be back with the club next season.
The South Cumbrian went through the St Helens youth system, making his Super League debut for them in 2022, he made his Super League debut for St Helens off the bench for the late season game against Wakefield Trinity.
He joined Barrow in 2023 and played 13 times in the Championship, scoring three tries, before linking up with Whitehaven and coach Jonty Gorley.
A regular at Haven he played 27 times and scored five tries.
He was one of the players that followed Gorley from the Ortus Rec to the Fibrus Community Stadium last season.
In 10 outings for Town he scored four tries.
Gorley said: “I’m really happy to have Rio back with us next season. He is one of the most professional players I’ve had the pleasure to coach.
“He just wants to work hard and improve in every way he can.
“Rio will be the first to admit we didn’t see the best of him until the second half of the season when he was constantly one of our better performers.
“I knew he could be and he contributed significantly to our six wins on the trot.
“I look forward to 2026 when we get “that” Rio and he shows us what he can do, he is a top player.”
Corkill said: “I am over the moon to have re-signed.
“Off the field, 2025 was the biggest year of my life and the support I have had from the club with all of that has been amazing.
“I don’t think Town saw the best version of myself at the start of last season, but I can’t thank Jonty and the staff for the support and backing they have given me which led me to finish the season as strongly as I did.
“That is the benchmark for myself for next season, and I will kick on from where I left off to show Workington the best version of myself.”
Corkill, 23, played for Nigeria against Cumbria last Sunday at Barrow. He qualifies through his grandfather and he kicked the conversion to his side’s only try.
