A man has died following a collision with a HGV on the A69.

The incident happened at around 6.25pm yesterday, Friday November 7 between Brampton and Haltwhistle.

Emergency were called to the scene of the collision near to the junction for Blenkinsopp Castle.

Northumberland Police said it was understood that a black Mercedes GLA 200 had been travelling westbound when, for reasons yet to be established, it collided with a red HGV travelling in the opposition direction.

A grey BMW 3 Series and a black Volvo XC60 travelling westbound were also damaged as a result of debris from the collision.

The driver of the Mercedes – a man in his 70s – was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers, police said.

A passenger from the Mercedes – a woman in her 70s – was taken to hospital with serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

The occupants from the other vehicles remained at the scene to help police with their enquiries.

The road was closed for several hours overnight but has since been reopened to traffic.

Officers from the force’s Roads Policing Unit have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision, and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the BMW and Mercedes travelling in the area, as well as those with dashcam footage of the moments prior to the collision.

Sergeant Dave Roberts, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is a devastating incident where a man has sadly lost his life, and another woman has sustained serious injuries.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s loved ones, and they are being supported by specially trained officers at this incredibly difficult time.

“We have launched an investigation into the collision, and we are now appealing for any witnesses who could help us to come forward.

“This is a busy road, and we’re particularly keen to speak with drivers who were travelling in the area at the time, and anyone who may have dashcam footage.”

Anyone with information should contact Northumbria Police by sending a direct message on social media, or by using live chat and report forms on the Force’s website.
