Penrith crashed out of the Brooks Mileson League Cup last night after a 6-1 defeat at home by Newcastle Blue Star.
Jim Nichols, the Penrith manager, had opted to make sweeping changes and give his fringe players the opportunity to show what they could do.
In the end it was a game dominated by the opposition and Penrith’s run of 10 games unbeaten came to a shuddering halt.
Goals from Jakub Zyck (5) and Daniel Lanning (24) had put Blue Star 2-0 ahead before Luke Hunter, one of the regulars who started, pulled one back on 31 minutes.
It remained 2-1 at half-time but the visitors dominated the second-half and scored four more times without reply.
Lanning went on to complete his hat-trick; Zyck scored his second and Leon Burke also got in on the act.
It was a sobering night for the Bonnyblues who will look to resume their winning ways on Saturday when they host West Auckland.
Carlisle City should have played their League Cup tie at home to Boldon last night but the game was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
Kendal’s home tie with Chester-le-Street, in the same competition, which was postponed last week has now been rearranged for December 2.
