Workington Town have signed the Newcastle Thunder speedster Alex Donaghy.
The 24-year-old utility back has been one of the most eye-catching products of the Thunder’s Academy.
Donaghy had started playing rugby league with Cramlington Rockets and from there joined Newcastle’s youth set-up.
In 2018 he was named a rising star at the Sport Newcastle awards as one of a dozen youngsters across a range of sports set for a big future.
He made his international debut for England Youth against Wales in Cardiff before making a couple of appearances in the Leeds Rhinos academy.
He made his Thunder senior debut 2020 and in the next four years made 49 appearances scoring 15 tries.
In 2024 he joined York City Knights but only played once and was loaned back to Newcastle where he scored four tries in 18 games.
Returning to Newcastle last season he played another 18 games and this time scored six tries.
Town head coach Jonty Gorley said: “This is the third time I’ve tried to sign Alex, so third time lucky I guess.
“He is a very experienced player who can play in any of the back positions 1 to 7 and do a good job in any of them.
“The main reason I’ve signed Alex is because of his pace. There’s not many quicker than him.
“In the Championship, he scored two full length tries at the Rec against Whitehaven and last season he turned and caught Zarrin – twice. Not many did that last year!
“his pace and versatility will be valuable to us this season. “
Donaghy said: “I’m really happy. I’ve had some great conversations with Jonty and I can’t wait to start working with him. I’m looking forward to playing for Town, show what I’m capable of and see what we can achieve as a group.”
