Evan Lawther when he was with Whitehaven

Newcastle Thunder centre Evan Lawther is the latest signing for Workington Town, taking the squad to 23.

The 22-year-old spent a brief spell with Whitehaven in 2024 but subsequently returned to Newcastle where he had started his career the year previously.

He has also represented North East Universities in their origin clashes with the North West.

He also played alongside another Town recruit and former Haven team mate Oscar Doran for Northumbria University who were the university national champions at the time.

Town coach Jonty Gorley said: “Having had Evan at Haven for a short period, I know exactly what he’ll bring to the table.

“I tried to sign him last year but his university and work commitments meant he couldn’t commit.

“This year fits with Evan, so it’s great to have him on board. He is a big, strong lad who plays centre and can leave defenders in his wake when he carries.

“I think the Town fans will very quickly take to Evans style of play.

“His no-nonsense style made him a stand out for Newcastle against all opposition last season. Evan can also cover second row and that flexibility is important.

“He has a good try scoring record in a team that’s has been down the lower end of the table lately and that’s a good sign for us. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Lawther said: “I’m really excited about the opportunity Workington and Jonty have provided for me and I can’t wait to get my head down and work hard for the coaches and the other lads.

“Knowing Jonty a while now I know he’s going to bring my game on massively and I can’t wait to get some class wins for the club and the fans this season.”
