Carlisle United manager Mark Hughes has been the subject of a documentary series Legends of Welsh Sport.
Streaming online, Hughes features in the first episode of a new series, a 30-minute programme which includes tributes from Sir David Beckham and Sir Alex Ferguson. Gary Lineker also makes a contribution.
The documentary focused on Hughes’ club career with two European super clubs – Manchester United and Barcelona – without going into his lengthy career in management, the latest role being at Carlisle.
For his part Beckham said: “There are certain players that played for United over the years that set the tone of the club.
“We were able to learn from players like Mark and this is why he is part of Manchester United history.”
Wrexham-born Hughes gives his own take on a tumultuous time in his career from his fall from grace at Barcelona to becoming an icon when he rejoined his former club Manchester United.
His rise to the top at United followed his early start in amateur leagues of Ruabon, near Wrexham and after proving himself at Old Trafford he was sold to the Spanish giants Barcelona.
It didn’t go well at the Nou Camp and his short-term troubles are discussed in the documentary along with comments from Lineker who was there at the same time.
Beckham, as a young Manchester United fan, had Hughes as his hero and recalls how he felt devastated when he was sold to Barcelona. Then many years later as a Manchester United player himself – he wore the number 10 shirt, following in his hero’s footsteps.
The documentary first aired on BBC One Wales earlier this year and is on BBC iPlayer.
