Upper Eden and Aspatria rarely fail to serve up a full-blooded contest and their latest meeting at Pennine Park was no different.
With only eight points separating the sides in the league table before kick-off, both teams arrived knowing this fixture would be a tough one.
However it was Upper Eden who came out on top 37-12 for a five-point victory.
Eden kicked off and immediately applied pressure, reclaiming possession almost straight away and settling into the game far quicker than their opponents.
Their early tempo forced Aspatria into defensive shape sooner than they would have liked. However, Eden were dealt an early setback when captain Tom Mooney was forced off with a shoulder injury.
He was, however, rewarded with a penalty in front of the posts which allowed Oliver Bennett to nudge Eden into a 3–0 lead.
Aspatria responded strongly, enjoying their first sustained spell of possession and meeting Eden’s physicality with their own.
After 10 minutes of hard carries and heavy hits, they finally worked the ball wide and Dan Weir found space on the outside to score in the corner. A superb touchline conversion from Ryan Scott put the visitors 7–3 ahead.
The game became scrappy as both sides conceded a cluster of penalties, and Eden’s task was made harder when fly-half Neldus Kruger was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on.
Despite being a man down, Eden’s forwards stepped up, punching holes through Aspatria’s defensive line. Their pressure told when Aiden Muller threw an inch-perfect miss pass to Luc Mouton, who finished in the corner. The conversion fell short, but Eden had regained the lead at 8–7.
Aspatria spent much of the next 15 minutes camped in the Eden 22, hammering away at the line, but the home side’s defence was outstanding—disciplined and organised.
That resilience proved crucial. Just before half-time, Dan Todd picked off a key interception and immediately fed Josh Alderson, who had the pace to sprint the length of the pitch and score a huge momentum-shifting try. Bennett converted, giving Eden a valuable 15–7 advantage at the break.
After the restart Eden looked confident and composed with ball in hand. Carries from Fin Rose and Will Birkbeck continually put them on the front foot, and pressure in Aspatria’s 22 earned a straightforward penalty in front of the posts, with Bennett able to stretch the lead.
Sustained pressure kept Aspatria penned in their own half, and from a scrum number eight Birkbeck broke before offloading to Alderson, who crossed under the posts for his second try of the afternoon. Bennett’s conversion pushed Eden further ahead at 25–7.
However, Eden’s rising penalty count gave Aspatria a foothold they desperately needed. A line-out deep in Eden territory allowed the visitors to muscle over for their second try with Chris Graham getting the touchdown but the conversion was missed.
Sensing the opportunity to chase a bonus point, Eden kicked a penalty to the Aspatria 22. After a series of heavy carries, Muller spotted a gap and darted through for the host’s fourth try. The conversion drifted wide, but the bonus point was secured.
Eden weren’t finished as quick ball from the restart caught Aspatria unprepared and Kruger sliced through their defence to score. Bennett added the extras.
It was a tough, physical contest throughout but Upper Eden’s relentless defensive work and sharp attack gave them a well-earned five point victory.
The win lifted them to fifth in the table, continuing their strong run of form, but for Aspatria it’s a different story now lying next to bottom and in a relegation fight to retain their Level 6 status.
