Barrow’s second-half recovery to earn point

Barrow staged a fine second-half recovery to earn a point at Gillingham with Josh Gordon scoring twice for a 2-2 draw.

It hadn’t looked good at half-time after they trailed 2-0, conceding two goals in a disastrous three-minute spell.

Jack Earing’s own goal on 25 minutes was followed by a second Gillimgham goal three minutes later by Aaron Rowe.

But the Bluebirds rallied strongly and they were given hope when Gordon reduced the deficit on 57 minutes and two minutes from time the same player grabbed the equaliser.

Recently arrived coach Neil McDonald was in charge for the game but the strong vibes around Holker Street are that former Morecambe boss Derek Adams is the fancied target for the job which followed Andy Whing’s sacking this week.

Adams, 50, has experience in lower divisions and relegation battles, making him a suitable candidate for the job having managed Bradford City, Ross County and Plymouth Argyle before a third spell at Morecambe.

He was sacked in August when crisis club Morecambe were eventually taken over by new owners after he had been in charge for 14 months.

His number two at Morecambe was Danny Grainger, former Carlisle United skipper and Workington manager who has subsequently joined the coaching staff in the youth department at Brunton Park.

Among other early names in the frame for the hot seat at Holker Street have been Garry Monk, Kevin Phillips and Jon Brady.

  • Meanwhile former Barrow manager Michael Jolley, who did not last long at Holker Street, has been appointed manager of Bury. He was only in charge for two months and eight games.
