A Cumbrian fell runner has completed a 190-mile winter Coast to Coast run in record time to raise thousands of pounds for cancer care.
Adam Perry, 37, of Sedbergh, finished the Coast to Coast route shortly before 8am yesterday, Sunday December 21.
He set off from St Bees at 5am on Friday, December 19.
His finishing time of 50 hours and 56 minutes broke the previous winter traverse record, set in 2020 by Sabrina Verjee.
Adam undertook the challenge in support of colleague Debbie Holland, who has received a terminal cancer diagnosis.
Despite opening his JustGiving page only the day before the run began, he has already raised nearly £12,000, with donations still coming in.
Adam said: “It was as big a challenge as I dared to take on for a much-loved colleague in the short time frame we had.
“Lack of sleep was the hardest thing to overcome — I had just shy of two hours’ sleep in the entire run.”
A particularly emotional moment came when Adam was met by Debbie and her father at Ingleby Cross.
“It was great to see Debbie there. She managed to find the energy to come out and that gave me a real boost.”
Adam also paid tribute to the support he received along the route.
He said: “I couldn’t have got out of St Bees without the support of a whole load of different people — feeding me, running with me, encouraging me. Everyone who donated helped keep me moving forward.”
Funds raised will support the Macmillan Cancer Support and Information Centre (Rosewood Centre) in Yorkshire and help establish a Maggie’s Centre in Cumbria, where there is currently no permanent facility offering this type of cancer support.
