A £1m project to upgrade 1.8km of water network in the Ulverston area is underway.

The three-month project in Lowick will see United Utilities replacing ageing water mains with new pipeline that is designed to protect against burst and leaks.

It is part of United Utilities £380m programme to upgrade more than 925km of water mains across the North West during the next five years. More than 200km of these will be in Cumbria.

As well as replacing the existing water supply mains with new pipeline, a new high pressure water main will also be introduced to help improve the resilience of the network in the area.

Work will be carried out in three phases, with two teams working simultaneously.

A road closure and signed diversion will be in place while work is carried out with access maintained for residents.

United Utilities said it had notified customers in the area to let them know about the work.

Paul Forshaw who heads up Water Services for United Utilities in Cumbria said: “The improvements we are delivering to the water network in Lowick and across Cumbria will play an important role in ensuring we continue to deliver a reliable water supply to customers for decades to come.

“As well as being designed to last more than 100 years, these new water mains are also built to withstand high pressure and temperature variations improving the resilience of our water network in the area.

“We know this type of work can be disruptive and we are doing all we can to keep that to a minimum.”

Contract partner M-Group is carrying out the work on behalf of United Utilities.
