A £500,000 project to upgrade water mains in Windermere is set to start on Monday.
United Utilities said the scheme will see just over 1.1km ageing water mains on Lake Road replaced with new more durable pipeline which is designed to reduce the
Paul Forshaw, United Utilities’ county business lead for water in Cumbria said: “This is a major scheme to upgrade the water mains running through Windermere.
“It is an important project which will improve the reliability and resilience of the drinking water network.
“This new pipeline is built to last for more than 100 years and because they are more durable and flexible, they can withstand greater fluctuations in pressure and temperature and are less prone to burst, especially in the winter weather we have seen at the start of this year.”
The project is expected to take up to 12 weeks to complete.
Work will be carried out along a section of Lake Road between St Herbert’s Church and the junction with Beresford Road.
Water mains are located in each side of the road and both will be upgraded, one side at a time, avoiding the needs for a road closure and significant diversion.
Mr Forshaw added: “We know these works can be disruptive and we are working closely with our delivery partner, M Group, to keep this to a minimum.
“To help with this we are planning to use a technique called slip-lining as much as possible. This is where new pipeline is inserted into the existing water main to minimises the need for digging large trenches and road closures.
“We have planned the work to start in January to avoid the peak holiday and tourism season.”
United Utilities has contacted customers in the area to let them know about the work.
