Northside have been crowned West Cumberland Sunday League Premier Division champions – while they were being held in a cup game.
For while they were drawing 4-4 in the league cup with the Sun, their nearest League rivals Moresby Rangers were also being held by Lowca Pirates in a Premier Division clash.
That result means Moresby can’t catch Northside in the games they have remaining, so the Workington side regain the title they lost last season to Deer Orchard.
Lowca versus Moresby finished 1-1 with McAuley Woodburn putting the Pirates ahead in the first-half and James Bell levelling after the break.
Meanwhile Northside, who had won all ten Premier Division games, were surprisingly held in an eight-goal feast by The Sun who had only won three League games out of 11.
Brad Barwise, Keenan Mackay, Dan Hill and Dylan Penn scored for The Sun with Tommy Whitehead, Chad Grisdale, Logan Bosward and Jamie Glover replying for Northside.
With just two games left Northside have a 10-point lead over Moresby who have three matches to play – so can’t catch the leaders.
Five games were played in Division One with leaders Senhouse Street strengthening their position at the top with a narrow 2-1 win at Sun Inn Athletic.
It had been all square at 1-1 after the first-half but the league leaders, who have lost only once in 11 games, scored the winner after the break.
Gary O’Driscoll and Leon Wharrier scored for Senhouse with Athletic running them close through a goal by Chris Byrne.
Sun Inn’s first team had been lying second but they came unstuck against Mirehouse who leap-frogged them in the table.
Jordan Priestley (2), Cyran Corlett and Braydon Walmsley scored for Mirehouse with Dan Pearson netting for the Aspatria side.
King’s Arms are also in the hunt, now second after a nerve-jangling 5-4 win at Workington Falcons.
Kieran Fraser (2), Lennox Hunter, Dylan McAlone and Bobby Fitzpatrick won it for King’s Arms with Dave Watson (3) and Declan Moore keeping Falcons in the hunt.
There was another tight game at St Benedict’s where Zebras edged-out hosts Royal Oak 4-3 after leading 2-0 at the break.
Malaki Norford (2), Ben Carini and Alistair Shaw-Hughes netted for the Zebras with Owen Proud, Blake Hardy and Carl Lofthouse replying for the hosts.
The other Division One game was the Maryport derby which finished level at 2-2.
Steven Stoddart and Arron Ross scored for Maryport Amateurs, who had led 1-0 at the break with Cie Hewitson and Ewan Laverty earning only Swan’s second point of the season.
There was only one game postponed this week as both Deer Orchard’s and Dearham’s pitches were unfit to play on.
