Work to safeguard Lake District road set to start today

Work is set to restart to help safeguard a key Lake District road today.

Contractors were set to work on the slopes by the B5289 near Ashness Bridge from November, but severe winter weather and unsafe ground conditions led to the project being paused for safety reasons.

Metcalfe’s Plant Hire, working on behalf of Cumberland Council, is now planning to start work from today, Monday, January 26.

From today, work will be managed by two-way traffic lights, allowing vehicles to use the B5289.

Activity will take place mainly along the shoreline of Derwentwater and traffic management may be removed at times during the day when it is safe to do so, the authority said.

The work focuses on repairing the slope supporting the road, using a combination of shoreline stone and imported material to stabilise the embankment and prevent further erosion.

It is due to be completed by February 20.

Phase two of the work will begin on February 23 for 10 nights.

The B5289 will be closed from 7pm to 7am until March 6.

The work involves rebuilding the slope from the carriageway using large machinery.

Cumberland Council said: “The essential work will strengthen the slope that was damaged during Storm Desmond and help maintain a safe, resilient route around Derwentwater for residents, visitors, and businesses.”
