A West Cumbrian Scout leader has been honoured for over 40 years of dedication to the organisation.
Steve Binyon has been presented with a Silver Acorn award for his contribution to the 4th Workington (St Michael’s) group and the wider movement.
The award is only presented to people who have carried out especially distinguished service that is better than outstanding.
He began his involvement with the group in 1975 after he discovered it by accident. Since then, he has been a committed member.
Steve’s first role was as assistant scout leader and met the Duke of Edinburgh on the Isle of Man and represent Scouting.
Steve also helped raise funds for the group to build its own purpose-built base on Fletcher Street in Workington.
The building of the HQ was done mostly by the Scouting team, which Steve was very much a part of and many volunteers from the surrounding area.
Yvonne Martin, the group’s lead volunteer said: “”Although it is not possible to measure the impact he has had on countless young people over his years with our group, the large number of youth members involved during his time as an Assistant Scout Leader speaks volumes for his commitment to Scouting.
“We are extremely proud of Steve gaining this award. He has held many roles during his time at the group and although Steve has now hung his woggle up from weekly meetings but is still very much part of the group.”
The Silver Acorn award was presented to Steve by Workington mayor David Farrar.
