Whitehaven’s Santander branch will close, it has been revealed.
The Spanish-owned bank announced it was closing a further 44 branches in the UK, putting 291 jobs at risk.
It said its customers had moved from high street banking to using online, telephone and mobile services more.
The Whitehaven branch, on King Street, is earmarked for closure by January 2027.
However, the firm said that independent industry body LINK, when it was informed of Santander’s plans, recommended that a banking hub should be created for the area.
Santander said it did not have a confirmed date for the opening of a new banking hub, so the closing date of the Whitehaven branch may change to align with the hub’s opening.
Between January 2025 and June 2025, it said 92% of customers at the Whitehaven branch also use other ways to do their banking, 12% of customers also use another branch and 91 personal customers have carried out transactions three times or more and only used the town’s branch.
It added 27 customers have made a general enquiry three times or more and only used the Whitehaven branch.
Once it closes, the nearest Santander branches are in Carlisle and Penrith.
