A toy grenade sparked false alarm on a West Cumbrian beach.
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team were called out yesterday afternoon to Allonby, to a report of a suspected grenade.
Crews from Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team and Cumbria Police also attended.
After teams assessed the item at the scene, it was confirmed to be a toy and inert, posing no risk to the public.
The item was removed by police for safe disposal.
A Whitehaven Coastguard spokesman said: “While this incident was harmless, many items found around the UK coastline and here in Cumbria do require specialist handling by ourselves or bomb disposal teams, including marine pyrotechnics and ordnance.
“Objects like this can be difficult to identify, so we’d like to thank the member of public who did the right thing by reporting their concerns to the Coastguard.”
