
Whitehaven’s new manager Brian Dawson is hoping for his first win tomorrow – although it won’t earn the County Ground strugglers any points.
The West Lancashire Premier Division side, who are bottom, are at home in the first round of the President’s Cup to Hawcoat Park who prop up the Second Division.
Dawson has had a tough start to his managerial role with matches against leaders Eagley and last year’s champions Tempest United, when he hasn’t been helped by squad absentees.
But there have been positives in both those defeats and he will be looking for more pluses from this Cup clash.
Cleator Moor Celtic are also in Cup action but it’s the Fred Conway County Cup for them and a really attractive home tie against Penrith from the Northern League.
Celtic are hoping to pull-off what would be a surprise win as manager Gareth Agnew knows his team are better than they showed last week in a 3-1 home defeat by First Division leaders Hesketh Bank in the third round of the Richardson Cup.
Penrith have had a number of postponements recently but were back in action last week with a good 2-1 home win over a capable Horden CW side.
Millom are back in winning form after amid-season blip spoiled a superb sytart to life in the top flight.
They have picked up three recent wins and tomorrow are also in knock-out action, hosting Haslingden St Mary’s in the third round of the Richardson Cup. The visitors are lying third in the table and will be tough opposition.
Milnthorpe Corinthians travel to Ulverston Rangers in the first round of the President’s Cup and hope to continue their improved form.
In the Wearside League Windscale have also been boosted by a recent win, beating Annfield Plain 5-1 on Saturday.
But they have a tricky obstacle to overcome tomorrow when they travel to play Silksworth, always a hard place to bring home the points from.
Windscale are 11th and Silksworth are immediately below them on the same number of points but have played two more games than the Cumbrians.
Holker Old Boys had a 2-1 win in midweek at Ashton Athletic after trailing at the break. Second half goals by Max Dixon (67) and Tyler Spence (79) earned them three valuable points, only five points shy of the [play-offs with games in hand of most ahead of them.
