Workington Town captain Stevie Scholey might have been on the receiving end of Friday night’s Challenge Cup-tie with St Helens.
It finished 98-2 to the Super League side but Scholey, who gave his usual wholehearted performance, had the chance to catch up with a former BARLA international team-mate.
Alex Walmsley was in the Saints line-up and after the game the pair took the opportunity to chat about their early beginnings in the game.
Scholey and Walmsley, both 35, were together on a 2010 tour to South Africa where they played five games.
Walmsley, capped since then by both England and Great Britain, was clearly pleased to meet-up with the Town skipper again.
He posted on social media: “Good to get the first hit-out of the year done.
“Proper old-school feel heading up to Workington – first time I’ve played there since my Batley days but that’s the beauty of the cup.
“Even better going up against an old BARLA teammate in Stevie Scholey.
“Thanks to everyone who came out and showed their support.”
Walmsley, who started in the amateur game with Dewsbury Celtic, signed for Batley in 2012 and after only 19 games joined St. Helens the following year.
He was immediately loaned back to the Bulldogs but only played three times before Saints had him on a permanent basis – and the rest as they say is history.
He has gone on to make over 300 appearances for the Saints, scoring 55 tries and has been capped nine times by England and four more by Great Britain.
