Two rare Star Wars figures were the highest selling lots in Mitchells recent vintage toy and model sale, which totalled over £50,000.

The Cockermouth firm said it was its best ever toy and model sale.

The highest selling lots in the sale were two rare Palitoy Star Wars figures, both still sealed in their original factory bubble packing and in excellent condition.

Luke Skywalker sold for £1,800 and Princess Leia Organa made £1,400.

A private collection of steam locomotives from a local collector also did well.

Two 3.5” gauge live steam locomotives and tenders Petrolea and Virginia made £1,000 each and another 3.5” gauge live steam locomotive Conway made £900.

A brass, hand built 3.5” gauge 4-2-2 steam locomotive, measuring 19.5” in length made £320 and a Joseph Falk German overtype horizontal steam engine, c1905, spirit fired with double wick burner, sight glass and whistle sold for £280.

The sale included two very large collections of comics and annuals featuring Beano, Marvel and Rupert The Bear, one around 6,000 items from a house clearance in Whitehaven and another totalling 5,000 items from a private collection in Crosby.

From these, Beano books were the most valuable with a group of eight vintage Beano annuals dating from 1943 to 1960 selling for £650, six Magic Beano Books dating from 1943-1950 making £550 and another individual Beano Book No1 from 1940 selling for £500.

A group of 24 Rupert the Bear Annuals from 1940-1943 from Whitehaven sold for £280. A collection of 97 Marvel The Amazing Spiderman publications made £240.

An Austin J40 pedal car in need of restoration greatly exceeded its estimate of £80-£120 eventually selling for £600.

Another surprise lot was a vintage Raleigh Chopper bike which made £420 against an estimate of £80-£120.

Among the models, a Volvo F12 Intercooler Turbo Truck boxed kit made £480. A boxed Doctor Who Astro Ray Dalek Gun by Bell Toy sold for £350.

Mitchells toy and model railways specialist David Lomas said: “It’s always a pleasure to sell private collections in the Toy and Model Sale.

“The buyers also love it and in this sale we had buyers from Australia, America, Hungary as well as all over the UK.

“What’s more, we already have a Star Wars collection and a private collection of O gauge model railways for our next toy sale at the end of July with the prospect of three more collections too.”

Entries are now invited for Mitchells next Vintage Toy & Model Sale on July 30 with a closing date of July 10.

Entries are also still open for the Country Sporting Sale from April 15 to April 17, with a closing date of March 6.

If you have something you might consider selling at auction, Mitchells offer free valuations by appointment at their Cockermouth saleroom and home visits by arrangement, including in the South Lakes & Furness.

Valuation services for probate and insurance and house clearances are also available. Contact Mitchells on 01900 827800 to arrange.

There is also a free valuation event on Saturday February 21 at Tweedies Bar & Lodge in Grasmere from 11.30am to 3.30pm with donations gratefully received in aid of St Mary’s Hospice Ulverston.

Just bring your antiques, jewellery, pictures, collectables and curios to be valued free of charge by Mitchell’s antiques and fine art experts.
