A heartwarming tale will have its West Cumbrian debut next month.
When the population of a remote town doubles overnight, the power of kindness and community helps thousands of people find hope amongst tragedy.
Workington Amateur Operatic Society brings Come From Away to the town’s Carnegie Theatre – a real-life story that became an award-winning musical that follows residents of a remote Canadian town as they feed, clothe and befriend thousands of “come from awayers” when their planes are diverted to the island.
Cast member Amy King said: “This is the first time the show has been performed in West Cumbria, so we’re really excited to bring something new to the Carnegie Theatre.
“It’s a wonderful story full of kindness and humanity and is packed full of fun and laughter. We hope that the audience will enjoy it as much as we do.”
Performed by a cast of just 13, each playing multiple characters from all over the world, the society said the show promised to be an antidote to gloomy moods.
Several award-winning and award-nominated performers star, including Tony McGee as local police officer, Jasmin Smith as the first female captain of American Airlines, and Philippa McMinn as a new reporter sharing events as they unfold.
Come From Away is the second show performed as part of the society’s 120th anniversary celebrations. It is at the Carnegie Theatre in Workington from March 11 to March 14.
