Cumbrian adventurer and world-renowned climber Leo Houlding is usually known for his death-defying solo ascents.
However, his latest expedition was a family affair. Alongside his wife Jess and their children, Freya and Jackson, Leo spent a year travelling the globe to explore the limits of road-schooling.
He will be sharing stories of his family’s year of education through adventure at an event at Windermere School next month.
Swapping the school run for steep summits and the daily grind for grand adventures, the family rented out their home, packed their bags, and set off to explore the world.
From shredding powder in Japan to climbing El Capitan, sea-kayaking across uber remote archipelagos in Papua New Guinea to unclimbed 4,000m peaks in Kyrgyzstan, their travels took them to some of the planet’s most iconic wild places — all with the challenge and joy of schooling on the road adventuring as a family.
Expect jaw-dropping tales, stunning photography/film, and candid reflections on the highs, lows, and life lessons from a year spent chasing dreams together.
Leo said: “Our year on the road taught us that education and adventure can be one and the same—messy, exhilarating, and full of learning.
“I’m excited to share the stories and the lessons we brought home with our local community at Windermere School.”
A story of risk, resilience, and reward sure to inspire to embrace discomfort, confront fear, and chase your own horizons.
The event, on March 10, will also include exclusive films, a Q&A and book signing.
