Striker Daniel Ogwuru was an unused substitute for Morecambe last night in their frantic 4-4 National League draw at Gateshead.
The 21-year-old Ogwuru had scored three times for Workington in five games on loan from the Shrimps before he was recalled on Monday.
The Reds were hoping to have him for the rest of the season but new Morecambe manager Jim Bentley wanted to have a look after his successful scoring stint with the West Cumbrians.
Ogwuru has swapped an NPL Premier Division battle for one two levels higher as last night’s point kept Morecambe firmly in the drop zone eight points from safety.
It had been quite a game in the North East with Morecambe falling behind after just three minutes after Keaton Ward scored for Gateshead and then opening up a 3-1 lead with goals from Chris Popov (2) and Jack Nolan.
Gateshead pulled one back from the penalty spot in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
A second penalty six minutes into the second-half put Gateshead level, before a quick response on 53 minutes saw Popov complete his hat-trick and edge Morecambe ahead again at 4-3.
Billy Chadwick, who had scored both Gateshead penalties, completed his hat-trick on 73 minutes to end the scoring and leave the sides all square.
Ogwuru can look forward to a chance on Saturday, perhaps, when Morecambe have a really attractive – but ultra tough home game – against leaders York City who are unbeaten in their last 23 games.
