New support group launches for young mums

A new peer support group for young mums will launch this month.

The Happy Mums Foundation will launch the group for teens to those aged 25 on March 18 at the People First Conference Centre on Milbourne Street in Carlisle.

The group has been developed in partnership with Cumberland Family Hubs, Together We, and Healthwatch Cumberland and the group aims to provide a safe, judgement-free space for young women to connect, share experiences, and support one another through the unique journey of early motherhood.

At the launch day, young mums will have a chance to relax and pamper themselves. It is a drop-in session between 10am and 2.30pm.

They can enjoy hand massages and bath-bomb making with Lush, receive a professional portrait of themselves and their little ones by River and Pear Photography, and take home goodies—all completely free.

Following the launch, weekly meet-ups will be held at the Newtown Family hub, every Wednesday from 1pm to 2pm to help build friendships and confidence.

While maternal mental health challenges are common, research shows that up to 40% of young mums experience perinatal mental health difficulties, compared to 27% of the general population in the region.

Many young women report feeling isolated or judged in traditional settings, sometimes avoiding public spaces altogether due to the fear of unkind comments.

Lucinda Bray, managing director of The Happy Mums Foundation, said: “We know that for younger mums, the pressure can feel immense, and the fear of being judged often prevents them from reaching out.

“Being a mum shouldn’t be a journey anyone walks alone. There is incredible power in making connections with others who are in a similar situation; it reminds you that you are doing a great job and that your feelings are valid. This group is about building that community together.”

The project is being co-created with the mums themselves. Rather than following a rigid structure, organisers are inviting young mums to help shape the group’s future, ensuring the support provided is exactly what they need and want.

Jo Hymers, maternal link worker from Together We, added: “This group is a wonderful opportunity for mums to focus on that vital bond with their baby in a relaxed environment.

“Whether it’s learning about using slings to keep your little one close or simply finding the type of support that feels right for you, we are here to help you find your own path. We want every young mum to feel confident and supported.”
