Kendal Town have stepped up their push for the Northern League play-offs by making three signings ahead of this afternoon’s home game with Birtley Town.
Matty Clarke has joined on dual registration from Lancaster City while Jack Porter and Alessio Ruocco arrive on work experience loans from Carlisle United and Fleetwood Town respectively.
Clarke is a versatile player, who can play in defence or midfield, and he returns to Parkside Road after a previous spell in 2018.
He subsequently clocked up 130 appearances across four seasons at Workington, and also lists Penrith, Bradford Park Avenue and Clitheroe among his former clubs.
Kendal manager Matt Flynn said: “Matty is a fantastic signing for us and one that shows intent.
“There was no way I could pass up on this opportunity when it presented itself. He can play anywhere, but also has great experience and leadership qualities.
“I want to thank Jimmy Marshall at Lancaster for letting him come and I hope we can keep him until the end of the season.”
On Porter and Ruocco, Flynn added: “I’m happy to get Jack at the club. He is highly regarded at Carlisle United, so to have an opportunity to get him in is something I couldn’t let go.
“Jack is a tall and dominant centre half, who is also excellent on the ball. I hope I can help him in his development, and as always, I’m grateful to Carlisle for another loan.
“Alessio is a another solid defender who has been consistent for Fleetwood’s academy. I spoke with staff from Fleetwood, and when he was mentioned, I was over the moon. He’s got great desire and is someone who will give everything for the club.”
Kendal entertain Birtley Town this afternoon as they look to strengthen their place in the play-offs.
Penrith are facing a tough trip to leaders Shildon in the Northern League Premier Division after losing 3-1 to second-in-the-table Guisborough on Wednesday.
Robbie Ivison is still missing; James Bell is injured; Matty Bell is suspended and Matty Coomb won’t play again this season after an operation.
Carlisle City are also playing again after a mid-week defeat – going down 2-0 at Thornaby to two goals in the last 15 minutes. They travel to Newcastle Benfield.
Meanwhile Windscale’s Wearside League game at Seaton Carew was called off yesterday afternoon.
Heavy rain in the North East had left parts of the pitch standing in water so the West Cumbrians were informed accordingly.
The Atoms had been restricted in team choice with a number of injuries and other unavailabilities and for the first time for some considerable time were unlikely to fill the substitute’s bench.
Manager Stephen Fawcett said: “It’s 50-50 I suppose being off. We would have been a few players short but it does mean another extra game to be fitted towards the end of a long season.”
