Wath Brow Hornets were beaten in their opening Conference Premier Division game of the season, losing 44-26.
But from a Hornets side in transition, and with a number of young players finding their way, it was a promising effort against one of the two best teams in the competition last season.
Coach Ian Rooney gives his thoughts below but he was happy enough, particularly with their first half competition rate and the way they finished the game after a 15 minute spell immediately after half-time put the game beyond them.
Centre Morgan McCourt caused West Hull problems on several occasions and he had put the Brow into an early lead with a try converted by Sam Curwen.
The Humbersiders came back with three tries, one of them converted to lead 14-6 before McCourt got over for his second try.
The half finished with West Hull leading 18-10 and Wath Brow very much in the contest.
But by the time McCourt went in for his hat-trick try, converted by Curwen, the deficit had grown to 38-16 and the game as a contest was gone.
Wath Brow dug deep, though, and with a committed effort over the closing stages scored further tries through Jamie McAllister and Jamie Devine, one of which was converted by Curwen.
It doesn’t get any easier for Wath Brow next week, although they will be at home when they take on the other of last season’s big two Siddal.
