Former Workington Reds defender Tyler Magliore is helping League One strugglers Port Vale become the season’s FA Cup giant-killers.
The 26-year-old defender was brought to Reds by manager Billy Barr as his first signing, to boost the struggling Cumbrians and re-build his own career.
It worked for he helped steady the Reds defence and then got the chance to get back into League One with Port Vale.
Now he’s into the quarter finals of the FA Cup eagerly awaiting tonight’s draw after another gritty 1-0 win, this time over Premier League Sunderland.
Magliore, released by Northampton at the end of last season, played 97 minutes on Tuesday when Vale beat Bristol City 1-0 after extra time.
Yesterday, in a televised tie, he came on as a second-half substitute and helped see his side over the finish line for another memorable victory. It’s only the second time in their history that they have reached this stage of the competition.
It’s been achieved despite the fact they are 11 points adrift of safety in League One and the contrast in Cup and League form has been particularly noticeable.
Their hard-earned win over Sunderland was their seventh in the two major cup competitions, the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, yet they have only won six of their 32 League One games.
Manager Jon Brady has helped boost the side since he came in with five of their six league wins coming in 2026, four of them since Brady took charge in January.
Brady knew all about Magliore having signed him for Northampton during his time there before he got the axe as manager in 2024.It seems a switch to Port Vale is proving a career boost for the 51-year-old Australian – not to mention a former Workington defender
