Levens Choir will perform Handel’s Messiah at two concerts this month.
First performed in Dublin in 1742, it was such a success that audience members were advised, for fear of overcrowding, to leave their hooped skirts and swords at home.
Almost 300 years later, Messiah – written in just 24 days – remains one of the best-loved and most frequently performed choral pieces in Western music.
Levens Choir, conducted by Gawain Glenton, will be accompanied by Ian Pattinson, organist of Lancaster Priory for two performances – on Saturday March 21 at Kendal Parish Church at 7pm and on Sunday March 22 at St Oswald’s Church in Grasmere at 3pm.
Tickets are £15, free for students and children, from levenschoir.net, on the door and from choir members.
