After a dramatic week in which a third manager left Holker Street inside three months Barrow gained a precious point in League Two.
An improved performance under interim boss Sam Foley, wasn’t quite enough to earn the win but they were well worth their point from a 0-0 home draw with Accrington.
Foley had named himself among the substitutes after being put in charge until the end of the season following the departure of Dino Maamria on Wednesday.
Although Barrow had stepped up on their display against Bristol Rovers on Tuesday when they lost 2-0 in Maamria’s last game in charge, they still dropped into the drop zone.
Newport scored a late winner at Barnet to leapfrog the South Cumbrians and leave only Harrogate below them.
Accrington had not win in their four previous games so they were probably just as pleased to go home with a point. But, in truth, neither goalkeeper was seriously tested.
Stanley keeper Ollie Wright should have been worked more but dealt comfortably with a header by Josh Gordon while Rakeem Harper had a good chance but blazed over the bar.
Then right at the death Accrington thought they had won it when substitute Dan Martin thumped a long-range drive against Wyll Stanway’s post.
Former Carlisle striker Paddy Madden netted the rebound but was flagged offside.
Barrow now face two tricky away games at Salford on Tuesday and at Grimsby next Saturday.
