Workington Reds boss Billy Barr has stepped up his efforts to find a new striker to finish the season with.
It follows the departure of his last two loanee recruits Daniel Ogwuru and Luke Hunter back to Morecambe and Fylde respectively.
Barr said: “Obviously we were disappointed that Luke was recalled but that’s the peril of having loan players, and the same with Daniel.
“We thank Fylde for originally letting him out on loan and we wish Luke well going forward.
“I’ve no replacement at the moment but continue to work on it.”
Barr has continually been looking at strengthening his squad, and ideally would like to have someone who is able to commit to the club exclusively, but loans are often the only way to bring in new players.
The problem is increased by the fact that club stalwart Steven Rigg, a reliable and consistent frontman, won’t play again this season after undergoing a knee operation last week.
Barr was pleased with Saturday’s 2-0 home win over Stocksbridge which lifted Reds off the foot of the table for the first time since November.
Tuesday’s training session went well but there is no let-up in the intensive finish to the season.
Although Workington and title challengers FC United have the best form in the League over the last five games – 11 points each – there is still work to be done.
On Saturday the Reds travel to another of the sides down the bottom with them, Hyde United, who have had three defeats and a draw since their last victory.
But Barr said: “Hyde are like any other team in this League in that they can beat anybody on their good days.
“We have seven games left and we just need to concentrate on ourselves for all of them.”
The last seven games are: Saturday, Hyde Utd (A); Saturday, March 28, Hednesford Town (H); Easter Saturday, April 4, Warrington Rylands (A); Easter Monday, April 6, Cleethorpes Town (H); Saturday, April 11, Ashton Utd (A); Saturday, April 18, Warrington Town (A); Saturday, April 25, Leek Town (H).
Reds do have a game next Tuesday when they take on Westmorland League side Kirkoswald at Penrith’s Frenchfield in the semi-final of the Fred Conway County Cup.
Holders Carlisle City beat Penrith 2-1 on penalties this week to reach the final.
